It’s been a while since I had designed a bullet journal, but lately, I’ve been wanting to create more bullet journal designs. This week I decided to design a bullet journal to freshen my designing skills. Compared to the first bullet journal that I created back in March 2019, I realize that I have improved a lot since then, but I still have a long way to go. Here are some tips and tricks that I want to share as I design my weekly journal:
1) Start with a theme:
You can either go with your personal theme, which I did, or go with a seasonal theme. (if you don't’ know your personal theme or style you can read my previous blog on how to find your color scheme theme: https://kieusdesigns.wixsite.com/kieusdesigns/post/what-is-my-theme-color-style-finding-a-color-scheme-to-achieve-a-unique-design-made-by-you) However, you can create anything you want. For example, you can do a winter theme for December through January or do a theme on the mood of each month. It’s really up to you.
2) Do an outline:
In the beginning, when I started to design bullet journals, I would start without doing an outline. I messed up several times and I was wasting my time. After messing up constantly, I decided to use a pencil to sketch an outline, which saves me so much time and I don’t have to waste paper, whenever I messed up.
3) Invest in good (decent) art supplies:
You don’t have to buy the most expensive pen or pencil, but I do recommend getting a decent one. Something that works well, but it’s not too expensive. For instance, I highly recommend Pigma Micron pens and Tombow pens. They’re not as expensive or fancy as other calligraphy pens, but they get the job done. However, don’t go for something too cheap. You may end up buying more supplies and waste more money.
4) Use reference photos when drawing:
The image in your head may look different on paper. It’s best to google everything that you would want to draw. Otherwise, you will be messing up a lot.
5) Use google to search up words to correctly spell a word.
Don’t assume that no one will read your bullet journal. One day you look at your work and it will haunt you.
6)Erase as you go:
Whenever you are overlining your design with color, make sure that you erase the pencil outline first and then overline it with color, especially if you are using a lighter color. If it's a darker color, you don’t have to erase the pencil outline.
7)Erase the extra pencil outline after 5 mins or more of coloring it:
If you erase right away, then you may smear your work. You can either fix it or cry about it.
8) If you mess up, use whiteout. Don’t start over:
If you accidentally misspelled a word after you finish, just use whiteout. I always have a hard time spelling ‘Wednesday’ and February.
9) Don’t think too much when designing a weekly bullet journal page.
You will get better along the way.
