Over the past few weeks, I have been investing in pens even though in the last few months I had already stock up on my pens for the year. Well at least that I thought. However, I accidentally stumbled into a stationary store and now my wallet is crying in the corner.
I tested the pens for a few designs and here are some pens that I find interesting or annoying:
Pilot Juice Up 04 Pastel Purple (regular pen): This is by far my favorite color pen. The pen has the perfect grip and it doesn’t hurt my hand after a long time. As for the ink, it does come out smoothly, but if I am tracing or drawing for a long time the ink suddenly stops coming out and I have to do the thing where I have to scratch it on another paper until the ink comes out again. I would give this pen 4 out of 5 pens.
Staedtler triplus fine liner Navy Blue (bold/ink pen): The pen size is 03 or 0.3. Imagine the tip size is relatively similar to Pigma Micron pen 02, but it's a little bit thinner than Pigma Micron pen 08. When writing, the lines are somewhat bolder than a regular pen, but it’s not that deep compared to a sharpie pen. It's good for tracing, but be mindful that it will show up slightly on the other side of the paper. I sometimes use it as a header for my study notes, but most of the time I would use the pen to trace over my designs. The pen is very affordable, so if you can’t afford to buy a Pigma Micron Pen, the pen is a dupe but there’s only one size.
I would give this pen 3 out of 5 pens.
Tombow Fudenosuke Black (felt tip pen): There are two versions of this pen, hard tip, and soft tip. If you are into calligraphy, I highly recommend the softer version over the harder version. However, both works great for calligraphy. The hard tip gives you a stronger font, while the soft tip gives you a more flowy font. It’s a pen that I will repurchase over and over again. Although the price for these pens is a little bit pricier than a regular felt tip pen, these pens are great for beginners. I would rate these pens 5 out of 5 pens.
Tombow dual brush pen (Galaxy, Pastel, Primary Set): These pens are very affordable and great for beginners compared to the Fudenosuke ones. However, they do tend to smudge when you try to erase pencil marks. I would have to let the pen dry off for at least 5 mins before erasing. The pen has two sides, the felt tip, and a marker. I recommend this pen if you are doing big calligraphy designs, like a header for a bullet journal and I would rate these pens 3 out of 5 pens.
Gelly Roll 08 White (Gel pens): I recommend these pens if you love to write. It’s also a great pen to add little details on a design, but not color in. You can’t shade in a box with these pens, no matter how great the colors look on paper. The pen will either run out of ink or you will have to wait for the ink to dry before adding another layer. I would rate these pens 4 out 5 pens for allowing me to add in color details to my graphics and 3 out 5 pens for the overall pen.
